Friday 19/12/2025 Irish Fly Rod Company 3rd Generation

Not too bad of a morning in Foxford this morning, following a wet and windy week. No fishing possible but thankfully this week we have something nice to share with you. An old favourite has returned to the market and its going to be popular.

An old favourite makes a comeback

Introduction to: The New, Irish Trout Rod Co. 3rd Generation Fly Rods

Many of you will remember The Irish Trout Rod Co. fly rods that were available a few years ago. A very popular range of affordable good quality rods that are still giving good service on the rivers and loughs of Ireland.  Although often asked for them, for a few seasons we have not been able to get them. The good news today is that after an absence that left a noticeable gap in the Irish market the brand is back with a bang. We were fortunate to get a sneak preview of the new 3rd generation range at a recent trade show, and frankly, we were so impressed it led us to a significant decision.

Set to be a collectors item

Even in a small market we can all exist if we work together.

As tackle dealers who have championed quality local tackle, we have decided there simply is not room on the Irish scene for two competing fly rods. Consequently, we will be discontinuing our own “Great Western” fly rod to fully support and promote the Irish Trout Rod Company range in the coming season.

Designed by a decent angler, it makes a difference

A sturdy anodised tube

We know the angler behind the range and he knows his stuff (He didn’t give me a free rod to say that either, Yet!!). Designed and tested on the great western loughs, the rods are well finished. This is a hand-picked lineup built to suit the rugged Irish market. The rods come in an anodised aluminium rod tube which will stand up to a good bashing. The rods are 4-piece which is ideal for transportation. The AAA-grade cork handles are smooth and dense, while the anodised aluminium reel seat and all Fuji components signal serious, durable performance.

First impressions

We received our first shipment earlier this week and have been busy testing them. True to their heritage, these rods handle beautifully, offering a balance of power and sensitivity that feels instinctively right for Irish conditions.

* The 10ft #7 is a powerhouse for wet fly fishing on the large Loughs and will also be useful for summer Salmon and sea trout angling.

*The 10ft #5 and #6 are beautiful tools for dry fly work on the loughs.

* The 9ft #5 is a classic dry fly rod, a little gem for riverbank or boat.

* The 11ft 3inch model will delight traditional lough anglers who have missed this essential and almost impossible to find piece of kit.

* For salmon, the 13ft 6in #8 (perfect for rivers like the Moy) has a beautiful casting action with tons of power, yet remains sensitive to the gentlest take.

Value & Availability: A Word of Warning

We are happy to offer these rods as exceptional value for money. Given the incredible response we anticipate, we envisage a shortage of supply very soon. We currently have a limited stock available. When they are gone, they are gone until a new batch arrives—hopefully in time for Summer 2026. Order yours today and we will TRY to have it to you in time for Christmas.
